I thought I'd figure out this drupal thing quickly enough to get a site together, but it seems like wordpress is much easier to manage (for n00bs).

Documenting EuroVelo5

Motivation:

Cycling routes are awesome and should be promoted. Problem: lack of documentation of EuroVelo5, even on http://www.ecf.com/

goals:

a report like this one of EuroVelo 7

annotated routes with GPS coordinates like this one [suggestions for a standard?]

anotations for gps routes (with towns listed, photo and written evidence of tricky turns)

a blog (similar to ...)

KML documentation? Is this likely to be useful? Is it the best standard? It's "open source" but ... controlled by Google? What about GML?

Guidelines:

Stay open- (minded, source, finances, etc.)

Stick to the route! (much more important than "completing" the documentation from the tip of italy to london, is documenting a section of the route *well*. This includes doubling back and scanning perpindicularly for any other possible paths.)

Summary:

Why am I thinking about taking a month or two to cycle from Milano to Calais, France?

EuroVelo is a system of cycle routes across Europe.
It's a good cause. (link to why EV, like many pro-cycling organizations, is awesome)
It needs help! (link to evidence of it needing help, maybe the sign pointing into the lake if I have it)
I want to help it!
Do you want to help me help it?

Facts:
- distance - very roughly 1100 km / 680 mi, plus back-tracks and side-scans to verify the "correct" path.

To do list:

x get drupal up and working on gjemmott.com (so all content can be added centrally, and expanded to enormous capability. start off at eurovelo5.georgejemmott.com, if possible to have infinite sub-domains, or just georgejemmott.com/eurovelo5)

make a nice proposal - SOON, this will help get donations/funding, which will help the detail of the mission

itemize specific needs

funding/donations requests: whole trip or small donations, but I'm doing this already, so your contribution will make the detail all the better/more efficient.

ask ev7 person/group about + who are they? + how long did they take to make the report? + funding - how much? where from? how did they acquire it?

make drupal content types work for me. check out what others have done? install modules, see how to use them.

make a time-line, ideally a "calendar" field

create field for "openness issues to consider" (initial values of "source - code/plans/etc.", "information - copylefting", "finances - sources/sinks of money", "mindedness - there is a set of reasons for everything everyone does")

create inspirations section

acknowlegements/contributors - David Tresner-Kirsch: initial idea formation

develop specific requests list into a donations page, or into a content type with hover-over to explain why each is helpful to the mission, and clickable to explain the specifics

Do a test-documentation ride, here to Como, for example, or to Lecco. GPS it, independent from anyone else's trails, etc. Note signs, photograph turns, average 30-40km/day and document same-day. A real practice-run.
